9/11 Victims' Kin Seek Release Of Secret Documents

Source: bostonherald.com

3/25/2009

Three families who lost loved ones in the 9/11 terrorist attacks head to court today to plead with a federal judge to release a million pages of documents detailing the mass murder of nearly 3,000 Americans.

Those secret papers, one Bay State family member told the Herald, are “so bad you won’t believe it.”

“It was out control,” Paul Keating, 45, said of security on Sept. 11, 2001, including at Logan International Airport in Boston where two ill-fated jets left on a collision course with infamy.

“My mother went through the most public murder you could imagine . . . and I’ve been putting up with this crap for seven years,” Keating said of his refusal to settle his case out of court.

Keating’s 72-year-old mother, Barbara, a Framingham native, died aboard American Airlines [AMR] Flight 11.

Charlie Giles Needs Help

The other day I was told something by Charlie that is infuriating. His family needs help. Charlie has been a huge advocate for the 9/11 First Responders.

As a member of the FealGood Foundation, Charlie was not allowed to receive any assistance from us because obviously it would have been seen as a conflict of interest. Sadly, and appropriately, the FealGood Foundation asked Charlie to resign.

City "Slap" At 9/11 Uniformed Heroes

The city has asked a judge to toss out 9/11 claims by 4,600 cops, firefighters, and paramedics, arguing the "uniformed" personnel are not entitled to workplace protection under state labor laws.

The legal maneuver has infuriated Ground Zero responders, who called the city's move "a slap in the face."

New York's Bravest and Finest fought smoldering fires at Ground Zero, dug for human remains and guarded the toxic disaster site for months, the city says. But they don't get the same protections as manual laborers, mechanics and other "working men," the city contends.

"The uniformed plaintiffs do not fall within the class of employees entitled to the protections of the labor law," city lawyer James Tyrrell argues in a motion filed in Manhattan federal court.

Uniformed workers make up half of about 9,000 city employees, construction workers and others who have filed suits against the city in the World Trade Center cleanup.

The 9/11 Commission And Torture

The bipartisan panel that investigated the terrorist attacks was widely praised. But did its final report rely on suspect information?

Powerful Democrats on Capitol Hill are clamoring for creation of a bipartisan "9/11 style" commission to investigate the legality of the Bush administration's antiterrorism tactics—especially its use of harsh interrogation techniques.

President Obama has been notably cool to the idea. But the case for a "truth" commission was bolstered by the disclosure this month that the CIA had destroyed 92 videotapes of the interrogations and confinement of Al Qaeda suspects. A dozen showed the use of "enhanced" techniques routinely described by human-rights groups as torture.

"I was just in the hospital for 8 days with respiratory & coronary problems. Then I come out to find out that the insurance carrier decided at the last minute to appeal my award from workmans comp that was just given to me after waiting 7 1/2 years."

This was just told to me by 9/11 First Responder Charlie Giles. Charlie was an EMT that went into the North Tower to try and help people, and got caught when the building collapsed. He was pulled out of the rubble, and has had to deal with serious medical problems ever since.

Charlie is but one of thousands with similar problems. It has almost been 8 years since that horrid day, and for the most part, the 9/11 First Responders and the people of New York living around Ground Zero have been neglected. Neglected by those who were more than willing to use their images to sell two wars, take away our civil liberties, and practically destroy this country.

It is LONG past due that these individuals receive the help they so DESPERATELY need and deserve.

The September Eleventh Advocates Write An Open Letter To Senator Patrick Leahy

March 3, 2009

Dear Senator Leahy,

We felt compelled to write to you regarding your recent call for the formation of a “Truth Commission”. According to your press comments, this Commission is supposed to look at the following:

  • the politicization of prosecution in the Justice Department
  • the wiretapping of U.S. citizens
  • the flawed intelligence used to justify the invasion of Iraq
  • the use of torture at Guantanamo and so-called black sites abroad

These are serious allegations of criminal activity by certain members of the Bush Administration. While we applaud your initiative in looking into these matters, we feel this approach is wrong.

As the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, you already have the responsibility and legal authority to investigate matters relating to federal criminal law without having to form a special commission. You are also bound by your oath of office to support and uphold the Constitution by ensuring that those who govern also abide by the rule of law.

Furthermore, a “Truth Commission” will not fix the real problems that our country faces, nor will it guarantee that we will get to the truth.

A Suggestion For Senator Patrick Leahy

I don't know whether or not I agree with a "Truth & Reconciliation Commission." I don't like Nancy Pelosi, but I agree with her when she says that if there are "criminal ramifications," people should be charged, and should not be given immunity. Jonathan Turley said that it is a "shameful" way to avoid prosecuting war crimes.

Senator Leahy's "Truth Commission" seems to focus primarily on torture, but there is a possibility that more may be looked into. The basic premise seems to be though, that if it is a crime to be investigated, it will be a crime that took place Post-9/11.

A Month Of Change

President Barack Obama has been in office for one month. Prior to his coming into office, we heard that he will change the direction of this country. That he will get us back on the right track. It's still too early to tell whether or not he will live up to the hype. However, it's not too early to see if he is off to a good start.

I see a lot speculation on the internet as to who I am, and why it is I do what I do. I've seen the idea that I work in a movie theater. I've seen the idea that I live in my mother's basement.

The truth is, I'm an American. My name is Jon Gold. I was born in Philadelphia in 1972. I am 36 years old. I'm a graphic designer and a web developer for a small company. I play the drums, I have a cat named after my Grandmother, I like comic books, I like music, I like movies, I like boating, I like eating out, I find things like Egypt (other ancient ruins), and history interesting, I live in an apartment, and I drive a reasonably nice car.
