A “devastating” two hundred and fifty page document: “The Responsibility of UK Officials for War Crimes Involving Systematic Detainee Abuse in Iraq from 2003-2008″, has been “presented to the International Criminal Court, and could result in some of Britain’s leading defence figures facing prosecution for “systematic” war crimes” the (London) Independent on Sunday has revealed.(i)

The dossier charges that: ‘ “those who bear the greatest responsibility” for alleged war crimes “include individuals at the highest levels” of the British Army and political system.’

Among those named, states the Independent, are two former Defence Ministry supremos, Geoff Hoon and Adam Ingram, Defence Secretary and Minister of State for the Armed Forces, respectively, under Tony Blair’s premiership, during the planning and invasion of Iraq and for most of the UK’s occupation. General Sir Peter Wall, head of the British Army is also named.

"Plotters of the September 11 incident should be brought to trial. While regional nations knew nothing about the event, yet countries were occupied [because of it]," IRNA quoted President Ahmadinejad as saying in a press conference in the Azeri capital of Baku on Thursday.

"A fact-finding committee which is trusted by nations should investigate the 9/11 event," he added.

The president emphasized that if US statesmen truly possess firm documents about what happened during the incident, as they claim, they should not fear the establishment of a fact-finding committee and can produce their evidence to the body for a probe.

An invasion of Iraq was discussed within the Government more than two years before military action was taken – with Foreign Office mandarins warning that an invasion would be illegal, that it would claim "considerable casualties" and could lead to the breakdown of Iraq, The Independent can reveal.

The extent of Whitehall opposition to the policy eventually backed by Tony Blair emerges just three days before Gordon Brown will appear at the Iraq Inquiry, where he will be asked to explain his role in the Government's decision to invade.

A French newspaper has published what appears to be a diplomatic cable saying Britain's ambassador to Kabul thinks the West is losing the battle for Afghanistan.

The coded cable reproduced Wednesday in Le Canard Enchaîné seems to be from France's deputy ambassador to Afghanistan, François Fitou, describing a conversation he had with the British ambassador to Kabul, Sherard Cowper-Coles.

It says Cowper-Coles believes the West's war against Taliban forces in Afghanistan is being lost and the coalition that includes Canada's Armed Forces should leave an "acceptable dictator" in charge of the country within five to 10 years.

"We have no alternative to supporting the United States in Afghanistan, but we should tell them that we want to be part of a winning strategy, not a losing one," the cable paraphrases the ambassador as saying.

John Stone, a salesman at Bodle Brothers agricultural merchants, was bemused by the bizarre request. The flashy young man who had arrived in a customised Audi, rap music blaring, had asked for 600kg of ammonium nitrate fertiliser for his allotment.

It was winter, thought Mr Stone, and the order was enough to cover five football pitches. “What do you want all that for?” he asked sarcastically. “Are you planning a bomb attack?”

Unwittingly, he had hit on the truth. The fertiliser was to be used by a terrorist cell of mainly British-born Muslim men to build a huge bomb. The group had discussed attacking the Ministry of Sound nightclub, Bluewater shopping centre, a train, a pub and a list of synagogues.

Anthony Garcia was chosen to buy the fertiliser because he had paler skin than the others.
