Chris Hedges challenges NDAA in court

Uploaded by RTAmerica on Apr 2, 2012

Last week the case against the National Defense Authorization Act was presented to a judge in New York. One of the plaintiffs in the case has decided to sue the Obama administration claiming that by simply doing his job he could be arrested and detained indefinitely due to the nature of his work, reporting. Chris Hedges, columnist for TruthDig, joins us to explain how his day in court went.

Chris Hedges

I love this guy. Chris Hedges has been compared to Dietrich Bonhoeffer; he even looks like him. They have a lot in common; both are theologians with the strength to stand against tyranny. In Bonhoeffer's case it was the Nazis.

Hedges is a 9/11 Truth gatekeeper

Hedges states the following in his book, Death of the Liberal Class:

"...about seventy were peace activists who, as usual at such events were joined by a motley collection of conspiracy theorists who insisted that 9/11 was and inside job, or that Senator Paul Wellstone, who died in a 2002 plane crash, had been assassinated."

Hedges makes clear by this statement that he wishes to remain squarely within the limits of criticism allowed by the ruling elite, joining the ranks of Noam Chomsky, Bill Maar, Naoimi Klein, Naomi Wolfe, Amy Goodman, The Nation, and so on.

Ugh... I was waiting for

Ugh... I was waiting for someone here to poo on Chris Hedges, but I was expecting a posting of the video where Hedges says he doesn't know what happened to WTC7 as proof he is part of what he so eloquently speaks out against.

Help me to understand

Please tell me more so I can understand where I might be mistaken in my viewpoint. I was excited to read Hedges book soon after it was published but was dismayed when I encountered the above quote. I concluded that he was signaling to the world of power and media that he could be trusted to promulgate the OCT whenever necessary. I continued to read because he delivers much good analysis; however, the fact remains that the single most important event in today's state of permanent war, 9/11, is being used by Hedges to actively disinform.

Divide and rule ...

... is the old, tried and tested, highly successful tactic to keep dissenters squabbling ineffectively among themselves.

Divide and rule = cognitive infestation.

I don't blame anyone for NOT wanting to get involved in the 911 discussion.

If you raise the 911 discussion the odds are you will be (a) laughed at or sneered at (b) smeared by corporate media (c) shouted down by scared professionals worried about career suicide and a monthly salary.

911 Truth threatens people's worldview. People like their comfort zones. People often resist scary stuff all the way.

Perhaps people like Hedges have made a tactical decision to avoid the subject for fear of being chopped off at the knee.

It's kind of understandable.

There's no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater. This is binary, either/or thinking. Hedges is eloquent and moral. Leave him be.

Maybe Hedges will come over one day and say: 'Hey, it took me a long time but I finally understood.'.

Hedges was active, not passive, in his 9/11 Truth smearing.

Hedges went far beyond "not wanting to get involved." His "tactical decision" was to actively disparage the 9/11 Truth movement using a well recognized smear. It's not "kind of understandable" to me. I do "blame" him. His decision was calculated to anchor him, in writing, on the side of the military / banking / oil corporate elite. I do not trust that character.

Chris Hedges is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT...

Chris Hedges is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about the "9/11 Truth movement."

Now hurry up and vote this comment down!

I agree with your assessment Simple Truths

Three others in the same camp are Jeremy Scahill, John Perkins, and Adam Kokesh.

All would be powerful additions to our effort.

Cognitive infiltration...

The cognitive infiltration continues apace. The subjects are primarily intellectuals, especially on the left; those who can articulate a coherent argument with rational terms, but cleverly keep within a set of boundaries so as not to jeopardize their own case. Chomsky is a classic example of such; he was one of the very first to publish a book about the 9/11 attacks in which he ignored the most obvious problems (read lies, impossibilities, inconsistencies, unlikelihoods, etc) with what we were told. He even admits the strategy, in one of his more famous quotes:

"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate."

Hedges, despite his admirable flail at that treasonous section of the NDAA, is undoubtedly a gatekeeper; a promoter of the official sheepdip.

Well put.

Well put.

He's got it

"I came back and realized that the corporations had carried out a coup d'état in my country."

He doesn't need to talk about 9/11. 9/11 is NOT the ONLY way to awaken the masses to take our country back. Once enough people get active for whatever cause, the walls will fall like the Berlin wall. When the coup d'état is exposed and becomes something the media can no longer contain, 9/11 Truth will be more readily accepted.

Some people in the TM have become Purists and bash everyone who doesn't meet their standard for trutherism.

Enough with the nay saying. We need to support Hedges and people like him who are trying to expose the underlying corporate takeover of out country. 9/11 is just one symptom of that larger conspiracy.

Waiting for Hedges to endorse 9/11 Truth is a fool's game.

Chris Hedges has laid his cards on the table. He is a potent adversary because he stands for everything but 9/11 Truth. There are authentic writers and activists who deserve our sincere attention.
