Bad company.

Here are a few others who have no idea why they were unpopular because they actually thought they were doing the right thing at the time.
Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao Tse Tung, Ghengis Khan.
Actually Cheney is a lightweight in this company but the justification is the same in all cases.
