More than a movement -- the search for 9/11 truth is an awakening

A year ago, I announced in this forum the launching of my survey for a book that would compile personal accounts of ordinary people active in the 9/11 truth movement. Since then, I’ve been gathering dozens of revealing, often moving stories from inside and outside the U.S., and I’ve begun to put a shape to Voices for 9/11 Truth. Along the way, I’ve come to believe that what we call the 9/11 truth movement is not really a movement per se. It’s something else, something potentially more important, more meaningful, and maybe even more impactful.

First, the obvious: we’re not exactly a homogenous group. Yes, there is a shared commitment to prompt a thorough and impartial 9/11 investigation and unravel the sinister mess behind the crime and cover-up, but we’re not linked by bloodlines, gender, age, economic status, or any other common entity. We’re no clearly defined, pre-established group seeking a platform to gain rights or power -- and anyway, we’d be hard pressed to put together a thousand members for a rally, let alone hundreds of thousands. In fact, what I’ve been most struck by in fielding these personal accounts and interacting with the gutsy people behind them is the wide diversity of those who believe that 9/11 was orchestrated from within our government.

That diversity should strengthen the sense of real community among 9/11 truthers while further dispelling the government and corporate media’s ridiculous attempts to marginalize and pigeonhole those who conclude that 9/11 was clearly an inside job.

We’ve all seen how some of the more visible members of the 9/11 truth movement highlight their professional standing: scholars for 9/11 truth, engineers and architects for 9/11 truth, etc. Understandingly, they believe that impressive titles or credentials are essential in establishing credibility of the evidence -- and the movement itself. But as I’ve dug deeper into who’s really out there spreading the truth about 9/11, I’ve found an inspiring assemblage of ordinary people from all walks of life. I’ve heard from priests, veterans, entrepreneurs, lawyers, therapists, technicians, comedians, students, writers, broadcasters, salespeople, homemakers, a DVD producer, a former intelligence officer, and a former member of FUNY, as well as those who happen to be engineers, scholars, and scientists. The credibility of the average person plastering their towns with 9/11 truth DVDs, organizing grassroots lectures and rallies, or just trying to convince family and friends, comes not from their status but from their passion, their commitment, and the authenticity of what they believe and how they proclaim it, even in the face of rejection and scorn.

Geographically, Voices for 9/11 Truth have come from the Northeast, Midwest, South, and Far West of the U.S., as well as from several provinces of Canada. I’ve also heard from 9/11 truth activists from England, Spain, France, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Bulgaria, and Japan. Ages range from over-70 retirees to a middle-school student who debates teachers on 9/11 in the classroom. Socio-economical levels vary from struggling recent college grads to one truther sporting a 9/11 bumper sticker on a Porsche Boxster.

Even more striking has been the rich diversity in religious and, yes, even political backgrounds. My survey has attracted fundamentalist Christians, as well as Catholics, Jews, Mormons, agnostics, and those with more eclectic religious or spiritual leanings. In politics, respondents have in no way been limited to the ranks of Progressives, Greens, or Libertarians. I’ve compiled profiles from Independents, mainstream Democrats, and several Republicans, including those who, pre-catching the 9/11 truth wave, voted for Bush in 2000 and even ’04!

If we’re all nuts, it’s one hell of a holiday variety pack.

So the 9/11 truth crowd hasn’t come together because of something we are. Rather, we came to the same place through something that happened inside our psyches and spirits.

That’s why I see this more as a 9/11 truth awakening. Beyond the basic questions of who really did it, and all the hows and whys that go with it, diving into 9/11 truth for many becomes a personal and even spiritual process. It stirs us to ask deep and profound questions: Who am I and what do I really believe? How do I know what I know? How would it change my life if I admit that “Dad” or any authority figure is really capable of the unthinkable? What does it mean to wake up and tell the truth every day -- to myself, first, and then to those around me who may ridicule me for what I say?

The first question I ask my respondents is how and when they first rejected the “official” government story and came to believe or strongly suspect our government’s involvement in 9/11. For some, the “aha” came within months, weeks, or even days (or hours) of the attacks. But many others did not cross that threshold until two, three, or even four years after 9/11. Reading David Ray Griffin, watching Loose Change, or coming across some other compelling source of evidence may trigger an initial exploration, but most don’t make the leap to the “other side” without some real soul-searching.

It’s more than just getting past cognitive dissonance. For many people I have heard from, embracing 9/11 truth has meant a massive overhaul of how they see themselves, their government, their media, their jobs, their churches, their families, and everything else around them. It’s little wonder, then, that when I ask how their involvement in 9/11 truth has changed their lives, many respondents paint a portrait of a major transformation and a lasting spiritual experience. They don’t speak as converts to some fundamentalist “ism,” but rather as grounded and aware people who feel like a veil has been lifted. Some are angry, or frustrated by the lack of action on the get-the-bad-guys front, but almost all are grateful for the personal change as they display amazingly creative and resourceful ways to open the doors for others to glimpse 9/11 truth. And the veils are coming off for more and more folks every day. As a former spiritually-oriented counselor and writer committed to both personal and cultural change, I’m especially heartened by this part of the 9/11 truth picture.

I’m searching for a potential publisher for Voices for 9/11 Truth, a daunting challenge in a climate where a best-selling author like Steve Alten had to veer far from the mainstream publishing world to find a home for The Shell Game -- a book that weaves 9/11 truth evidence into a novel! But as I wait and hope for a change in the weather, I’m trying to keep perspective.

We all want to see our culture act from the truth of what really happened on 9/11. We want Congress to wake up. We want the corporate media to wake up. We want not just a real investigation but real justice for the perpetrators. All that’s imminently worth our continued time, energy, and passion. But even if that sea change never happens -- as it sure hasn’t happened for so many other covert operations -- let’s get clear about one thing. This 9/11 truth awakening can never be called a failure.

.....for the great read.

Take a stand for Justice.

"We want Congress to wake up. We want the corporate media to wake up."
I don't think they need to wake up as much as stop being such spineless and devious cowards, and take a stand for Truth and Justice.
I think a lot more of the above mentioned people know or suspect the truth than would care to admit, but are waiting for someone else to take the first step, then they can all admit they were always a little suspicious or some other such excuse.
Cowards.

Good thoughts

Yes, and for some of us 9/11 was just the Biggest of a long string of Big Lies that included the King Assassination, JFK assassination (more "lone gunmen"), Gulf of Tonkin, Pearl Harbor, and the whole phony history of America The Wonderful as a Beacon of Freedom and Democracy in the World (what a pathetic joke).

But it's good to take note of how wide ranging are the people in this 9/11 Truth movement. Will it go anywhere? Who can say? I suspect not, unless and until We the People can take over the Corporate Media and regain control over our airwaves. As long as we are content to sit like mice in front of our TVs and radios listening to Corporate Spin and believing it to be journalism, or news, or truth or whatever, we're going to be living in a land of continual lies. 9/11 wasn't the first and it certainly won't be the last.

It goes without saying that we need a new public broadcasting charter, with an expanded and decentralized role for PBS, NPR, and their affiliates. Emphasis on DECENTRALIZED control of programming, as distinct from how PBS works today. If there is one sad truth 9/11 has shown, it is that leftist ideologues can be every bit as Stalinist and dismissive as the Corporate media czars -- even worse in some respects. So we don't need a leftist version of BBC. We need a hugely funded, decentralized media, with radio stations, TV stations, and newspapers that can challenge the blatant lies and sensationalism dished out by the corporate media. Why should we settle for anything less? Media is not some "extra" in a democracy, it is the lifeblood of democracy, as Jefferson knew very well.

this was my favorite part

It is an awakening Kevin.

It is an awakening Kevin. This movement either is, or very much like, a spiritual movement, in the purest sense of that word. That's why we will prevail. Our untainted goal is the truth. Just the truth.

Beautiful

: ...a spiritual movement, in the purest sense of that word. That's why we will prevail. Our untainted goal is the truth. Just the truth.

Like the old days when Light was seen in darkness, and people ran to tell others about it. They did'nt care if others thought they were looney. Some believed, others did not: Many remained blind and deaf even though they had eyes and ears. Its an old story.

Here's an idea.

People would be far more open to the possibility of a 9/11 false flag if they understood one very important, and verifiable fact:

The US government is not opposed to terrorism, and never has been. The Mujahadeen were terrorists, supported by CIA. The contras were terrorists, supported by CIA. The Cuban guerillas were terrorists, some of whom blew up airliners and yet remain free in the US today. Operation Gladio encouraged terrorism in Europe and was a false flag designed to blame "the left."

US supported "death squads" in Guatemala, El Salvador and beyond routinely terrorized entire populations. Operation Phoenix in Viet Nam used terrorism, as do most US military operations. Afghani civilians and Iraqi civilians know a bit more about terrorism than your average American.

Certainly the native American Indians were terrorized to no end for centuries, under the superior firepower of the fedearl troops. African slaves were living in terror across the south.

Terrrorism isn't just the buzzword of the day, but a long historical narrative that continues today in various forms -- and not just in the form of loosely organized obscure religious movements half a world away.

"People would be far more

"People would be far more open to the possibility of a 9/11 false flag if they understood one very important, and verifiable fact:"

Agreed.

One of the many things that makes that hard--in addition to the usual cognitive dissonance(but our government would NEVER do that!)--is a small group of false "false-flag" prophets screaming about 911-b and numerology every chance they get. These antics smear the entire false flag issue with the religious nuttery of the "end times".

Anyone not know what I'm on about, just google "Captain May". He's a right wanker.

Future false flags will be prevented by a combination of education, genuine democratic government and the destruction of the corporate military industrial machine--NOT by daft attempts to predict the "next 911".

Freedom of thought

Kevin,
Great piece and I agree. I created the following flyer and hand them out during 911truth street actions explaining what the movment means to me:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please think about 911

Freedom of thought is the main thing that the 9/11-truth movement is about. We are people who have taken the time to examine reports and evidence about the attacks and decide for ourselves if they represent the truth.

For us, freedom of thought means deciding that we can handle the truth, whatever it is. Because we have made our own decisions, faith in conspiracy theories is not for us. We are basically a movement of individuals who ask questions, really think and then decide for ourselves.

Please look at some of the available material and decide if it is time for you to join us. We are asking you to think and research-not agree. This is a movement towards the truth and most of us are not dogmatic. Decide for yourself if you have the real truth about the 9/11 attacks and join us if you can handle it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directly asking people to think about it seems to work. I staple a deception dollar to the flyer. Feel free to copy and distribute the above.

Persistent inquiry and forgiveness will lead us in change.

The new millenium's way to be an activist...

Mr Quirk,

I'm 60 years old...I was there in the 60s and since...and you are correct that the 9/11 Truth Movement is very unique and very "personally uplifting"...but there is something else...and its revolutionary.

Before the We Are Changes and the Webster Tarpleys changed the public personna of the 9/11 Truth Movement to one of confrontation mimicking some ineffective civil actions of the 60s and since, the 9/11 Truth Movement had developed AMAZING abilities to use the new info age, the webworld and internet to create a NEW way to inform the public. I call it CI...Civil Informationing.

CI uses the modern info-age of DVDs, website links, blogs, online videos and instant worlwide communications and "research sharing" to assemble a tool kit with which Truthers go out and hit the streets as we attempt to become own media, and to become own educators. Its amazing what a free DVD can do...

This is a HUGE difference from many past tactics of protest where the main objective was to show "disagreement or dissent" about policies. Additionally, it did not do very much at informing people about all that many facts, and it did virtually nothing to remain a political activist community for decades to come. The peace movement nodded off and woke up to find a country more militarized than at any time in this nation's history. And there are many other differences regarding the modern tactics of the 9/11 Truth Movement and how effectively it behaves in public when informing people.

So, just as interesting as is this collective of a wide variety of individulals dedicated to "Truth Seeking about the events on 9/11/2001", its even MORE interesting about the tactics and "tools" that have been developed to spread this "touchy" truth are so very, very different from last century's tactics.

In the end, the 9/11 Truth Movement will revive the duty and the process of citizens rejecting lies and seeking the truth about EVERYTHING. We are waking up the fine citizens who went to sleep just after the 70s, and we are teaching them about these "computery things" that we now use to inform each other.

When I speak to old gray hairs like myself from back then, most do not have a computer and are in a childlike "wondernemt' about all this technology as they rest on laurels from fourty years ago. I do respectfully claim that what I am about to say to them is acceptable because I'm an older fellow as are they, that I've done alotta time since being engaged in activism all along, and that I'm thusly qualified to speak. I challenge them in this way:

I suggest that they ask their children to buy them a laptop, and further, to ask their grandchildren to teach them how to use it...

This is because...its 2008 and NOT 1968 and we really need them to get plugged in and helping out.

All of this helps describe the new concept of CI...Civil Informationing where we don't confront authority directly, but instead, we use our time in pubic to converse with, and to hopefully convince our neighbors that 9/11 Truth seeking is a worthy goal that touches almost every thing that has gone wrong in our country over the last fourty years. CI also encourages that they again become activists in SOMETHING on an ongoing basis. Its a lot better than breaking out the peace signs and attending a march for an afternoon every four or five years.

Please visit: www.911civilinfo.blogspot.com and read through some of the ideas and concepts that we have collected.

In the end, CI once again makes us neighbors to our neighbors and it puts a PERSON at the end of the electronic tentacles of the internet. CI begins the procees of decentralizing power from faraway places and people representing [?] us, and it begins to re-centralize this power back into themselves, into their homes, into their towns, into their counties, into their states, and lastly, into THEIR federal government but only as they see fit.

At the bottom of all the "catharsis" felt by the 9/11 truthers, its taking back our own personal power and personal integrity as human beings that is so rewarding.

The 9/11 Truthers will be remembered as the folks who have stood up and stated..."We are not taking your lies anymore...no matter who the hell you are...", and a group that has banded together to "seek and share" the truth about this horrible event while creating absolutely brilliant and modernized tactics and developing skill sets in doing so.

Its the new century's TRUTH SEEKING baby...it AIN'T 1968 anymore...and 9/11 Truthers are the leading edge of this TRUTH...

Love, Peace and Progress with:

PUBLICALLY FUNDED ELECTIONS using HAND COUNTED PAPER BALLOTS on a NEW PAID FEDERAL VOTING HOLIDAY

...just for starters...

...a revolution of the mind....

...without question, the collective realization/revelation of the truth behind 9/11 will have consequences far beyond politics, the American border, and the rights of each and every human that walks this Earth. Conversely, until that truth is embraced by the world, the disease that is the current system continues to inflict misery upon people the world over; it is essential that the truth surface on a global level. The intended shock value of the 9/11 stage wounded the psyches of countless world citizens. And yet, another shock is currently looming for the unsuspecting masses: that 9/11 was an attack by criminal elements within the American spectrum. Such a realization is not easily entertained, even when the proof is indisputable. However, this movement is rooted in the individual; and the collective power of all these individuals united to bring this truth to light will level the current playing field of what we consider reality. When this truth surfaces - when the tipping point is reached - the reaction of the world' s people can only be swift and powerful. Our survival as a race depends on unification. In this sense, the 9/11 movement is the most important issue of the past 2000 years. Pick your system, -ism, or ideology --- they will all be wiped clean by this movement's eventual and unstoppable success.

Wow, you are gifted with words thisnewfoundland

I mean it. Your paragraph succinctly nails it.

Thanks, Joe

A very well written piece.

A very well written piece. Thanks for this. Yes we are all ordinary people
in the truth movement, as diverse as society itself, not a bunch of anarchist,
loony leftists as the MSM would have everyone believe.

Looking back, my own realization of the truth was
rather like an 'awakening' and completely changed the way i view the world.
Unfortunately it is very difficult for many people, (as it was for me
at first) to believe that their government and the
entire main stream media could be involved in such an horrendous crime.

This is a rather profound blog entry...

I believe, you are on to something, here.

9/11 Truth is something akin to consciousness-raising, spirtual awakening or just a breaking of the trance, a slap to the face to return to full consciousness. I am more fully human, now, then prior to my personal epiphany.

Hats off to this entry. There is plenty of room in this area for further exploration! Thanks.

...don't believe them!
