U.S. Listened in On NUMEROUS Hijacker Phonecalls

You know how the government said they didn't know the specifics of the 9/11 attacks? Well, turns out they'd been tapping the boys' phones for YEARS:

The National Security Agency and the FBI were both independently listening in on the phone calls between the supposed mastermind of the attacks and the lead hijacker. Indeed, the FBI built its own antenna in Madagascar specifically to listen in on the mastermind's phone calls. The day before 9/11, the mastermind told the lead hijacker "tomorrow is zero hour" and gave final approval for the attacks. The NSA intercepted the message that day and the FBI was likely also monitoring the mastermind's phone calls (so the excuse that the NSA didn't translate the messages until the day after 9/12 looks pretty weak -- the FBI was listening in also!)

Shortly before 9/11, the NSA also intercepted multiple phone calls from Bin Laden's chief of operations to the United States.

Indeed, the CIA and the NSA had been intercepting phone calls by the hijackers for years.

And of course, America's closest ally, Israel, followed the hijackers everywhere they went, including the Twin Towers.

September 9, 2001: Osama Tells His Stepmother That Big News Will Come in Two Days
It is later reported that on this day, bin Laden calls his stepmother and says, “In two days, you're going to hear big news and you're not going to hear from me for a while.” US officials later tell CNN that “in recent years they've been able to monitor some of bin Laden's telephone communications with his [step]mother. Bin Laden at the time was using a satellite telephone, and the signals were intercepted and sometimes recorded.” [New York Times, 10/2/01] Stepmother Al-Khalifa bin Laden, who raised Osama bin Laden after his natural mother died, is apparently waiting in Damascus, Syria, to meet Osama there, so he calls to cancel the meeting. [Sunday Herald, 10/7/01] They had met periodically in recent years. Before 9/11, to impress important visitors, NSA analysts would occasionally play audio tapes of bin Laden talking to his stepmother. The next day government officials say about the call, “I would view those reports with skepticism.” [CNN, 10/2/01]

Key quote, about when the NSA found out Almihdhar was calling al-Qaeda's communications hub, which it was already monitoring*:
"Then the NSA could have -- and should have -- alerted the FBI, which then could have used the information to locate the future hijackers in San Diego and monitored their phone calls, e-mail and other activities, the current and former officials said.

Instead, the NSA didn't disclose the existence of the calls until after Sept. 11, according to these officials and U.S. documents produced in two independent inquiries.

"The NSA was well aware of how hot the number was … and how it was a logistical hub for Al Qaeda, and it was also calling the number in America half a dozen times after the Cole and before Sept 11," said one senior U.S. counter-terrorism official familiar with the case."

* The calls were from phones registered in San Diego to Alhazmi, who the NSA knew was a terrorist by this point.

According to the Joint Inquiry, the NSA actually disseminated information about some of these calls to the intelligence community.

The 9/11 Commission Report actually mentions these calls (on page 222), but they omit to mention the NSA intercepted them. I guess it just slipped their mind.

This doesn't make any sense - the whole thing stinks to high heaven. For example, according to the Joint Inquiry the NSA even overheard Alhazmi discussing a terrorist plot in early 1999, but twice failed to disseminate this information until 2002 - fat lot of good it did them then. The precise nature of the plot was redacted in the final report, but, according to former British intelligence officer John Hughes-Wilson, Alhazmi was planning to hijack airliners.

To me, it looks like some Other Government Agency is doing something with Almihdhar and Alhazmi, which is why they are enjoying this protection.

Btw, I filed an FOIA request for the NSA intercepts of Almihdhar's calls, but it was denied.

do you mean *alleged* hijackers?

what makes you think these guys weren't making phone calls to each other in order to create the illusion of a plan that did not exist? and why should we believe anything the NSA or FBI say about these alleged calls?

The hijackers may very well be

patsies, on the payroll.

I periodically write strictly "they knew" and "they let it happen on purpose" essays to try to reach those who still believe the official story.

fair enough, but...

I think it's important to point out repeatedly that there is absolutely no hard evidence of, and much reason to doubt the occurence of hijackings per the official account. i realize it's not something worth starting a flame war over, but it's so important not to give the racist and unfounded OCT any more credibility than it deserves, which is nil!
