New York - Rudolph Giuliani pledged last night in New York that as president, he would make local communities better prepared to deal with terrorist attacks but faced withering accusations from 9/11 families that he failed to prepare the city as mayor, and cost firefighters their lives.
Giuliani spoke at his presidential campaign's first major Manhattan fundraiser, where guests who paid $2,300 a head heard how he gained strength from firefighters and police on 9/11 and that Hurricane Katrina showed too many communities aren't ready to confront disasters.

"Just like we have to do everything to prevent another Sept. 11, and to handle it better, if, God forbid, it should happen again, we must never ever again have another Katrina," he said, giving no specifics of how the 9/11 response might have been better handled.

Outside the event, more than a dozen relatives of people who died that day gathered for the start of a "Stop Rudy" campaign, -- to expose what they call Giuliani's failings leading up to 9/11, which they say contributed to the deaths of 343 firefighters.

These family members say Giuliani's failure to purchase improved city radios before 9/11 meant some firefighters with old radios didn't hear orders to evacuate the towers before they collapsed, trapping them inside.

"My brother was deaf, dumb and blinded by Mayor Giuliani in those towers," said Rosaleen Tallon of Yonkers, whose firefighter brother Sean died that day. "All I'm asking is that Americans who think Rudy Giuliani is a hero find out about him before you vote for him. Do not vote for the Mayor Giuliani who you saw on television. That was only one moment in time."

The accusations go to the heart of Giuliani's image as the man who helped lead the nation through 9/11 and already are being compared to the "Swift Boat" attacks that helped derail Democrat John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign by undercutting his persona as a highly decorated Vietnam veteran.

There are 9/11 families who back Giuliani, and his supporters say his image as a leader was so ingrained that day that it will be hard to dislodge. Nevertheless, his campaign last night supplied to reporters his former police and fire commissioner Howard Safir, who defended Giuliani's handling of the attacks.

This country is in a sad state of mind if they even consider electing this idiot to be or next president.

you would think

people would find his repeated invocations of 9/11, six years after the fact, to be, oh, exploitive.

If not exploitive, then at least desperate. He reminds me of the character from Rushmore, who, repeatedly held back in high school, continues to remind people that he wrote a "hit play" in elementary school.

How disgusting is it that this article compares the genuine accusation of a dead firefighter's brother to the dirty lies and political manipulations of the "Swift Boat" campaign against Kerry? Newsday should be ashamed.

When I read the title of

When I read the title of this blog, I thought, "so, if president, he's pledging to forgo any and all temptations to "false flag"?"

How nice of him.

Rest of the article--manipulative crap. But they really are trying--and does this mean Newsday doubts the credibility of the Swift Boat attacks? Did Newsday cover /promote those? If so, they're the sleaziest of sleaze.

Lots of competition on that count these days...

Impeachment. Accountability. A better world.

I love this...
