Nun Dies From Illness She Said Stemmed From 9/11 Dust

NEW YORK -- A nun who worked at the World Trade Center site in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks died Wednesday after a battle with lung disease that she said stemmed from inhaling toxic dust at ground zero, according to her lawyer.

Sister Cindy Mahoney volunteered at ground zero to bless the remains of victims.

Attorney David Worby said Mahoney, who was suffering from interstitial lung disease, hoped her story would help prove the connection between exposure to dust at the World Trade Center site and fatal illness.

According to Worby, Mahoney requested that an autopsy be conducted after her death to prove that the toxic dust at ground zero made her sick.

Worby, whose lawsuit against New York City was given a green light last month by a federal judge, said Mahoney's initial autopsy was conducted in South Carolina Wednesday, but that additional tissue samples would be tested in the coming weeks.

Extremely sad

i've heard this woman speak - and there could not be a more explicit example of humility and self sacrifice. she was at ground zero to aid and comfort people under the most horrific conditions imaginable - and she gave her life.

its easy to forget what we are fighting for sometimes - and its easy to want to just 'hang it up' and move on. this woman's bravery should be a constant reminder of why we can not.

Well said....thank you John....

....this is not only about who we're fighting for (shining examples of the best the human spirit has to offer, personified by Sister Mahoney), but also the sociopathic, self-serving bullies behind 9/11 we are fighting against.

I have a hunch that a lot of the posters on this board have the same visceral repulsion to psychopathic, sadistic bullies, who war-profitted from this crime, that I do.

A government that would purposefully send aid workers into a known toxic environment to assist in the criminal removal of physical evidence, is the same government that would perpetrate and profit from the crime of 9/11.

So remember not only who we're fighting for, and this is a tragic, poignant reminder of that, but also who we're fighting against.

But it's all part of their

But it's all part of their sick fable.... if the building simply fell down due to fire then there isn't a deadly toxic soup capable of killing people.

If they told people that the air was deadly toxic then they would have to tell people what was in the air that was making it toxic and that was not something that they were willing to divulge.

It's just another devistating consequence of the cover-up.

All the people working in the rescue effort are probably going to die.... all heroes in my eyes.... but in their eyes just less witnesses to deal with.

This will not die with the people who gave their lives for this fight.... We will not allow that!

In Deepest Appreciation

For six harrowing months, Sister Cindy Mahoney blessed human remains pulled from the smoldering debris of Ground Zero, prayed with the workers who painstakingly combed the rubble each day and comforted relatives of the dead when they visited the site.

Her dying wish is that her body undergoes an autopsy to prove that she was killed by her exposure to the toxic dust and air at the World Trade Center (WTC). Sister Cindy hopes that this final gesture will help to prove that thousands of rescue and recovery workers who labored for months at the site of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks sacrificed their health for their country as they inhaled the poisonous air.

Geez...

You just had to post her picture, didn't you... now I'm sad. She is a hero people. A real hero.

agreed. she'll be remembered.

I'd like to think that for every pedophile priest there are 1000 nuns like her. Given the too often deserved reputation the catholic church has institutionally it's important to remember that for many people religion serves as a powerful force for good.

I'm not ashamed to say that

I'm not ashamed to say that I cried when I first heard her story. She is such an inspiration to me, people like her and David Ray Griffin have done wonders to restore my faith, both in God and the human spirit. Thank you so much Sister Mahoney.

By the way...

Isn't this story the DEFINITION of "newsworthy?"

Isn't this story what you would expect to see on the front pages of every newspaper in the country?

There are currently two news sources covering this.

For those people who say, "If this is true, why isn't the media covering it?", the media DOES NOT WORK in this country.

Imagine... "NUN DIES FROM 9/11 DUST DONATES BODY TO SCIENCE TO FIND CAUSE"

Pretty much.

Oh, the shame of the MSM, and the abandonment of its democratic responsibility. May God forgive them, because I'm having issues doing it.

You can digg and buzz the story....

Cindy Mahoney...

Is a name I will never forget.

Cindy Mahoney

Cindy was so special. She was also my cousin, a year older than me, a whole lot wiser, and we all miss her. Thank you for your kind words and prayers.

I am very sorry...

For your loss.
