ISLAMABAD (Reuters) -- Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday that the whereabouts of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden remained a mystery and there was a suspicion that he could be dead.
Speaking to international media, Zardari said U.S. officials had told him that they had no trace of the al Qaeda chief, although they habitually say he is most likely in Pakistan.
Pakistan's own intelligence agencies were no wiser, either, Zardari said.
"There is no news," the president said. "They obviously feel that he does not exist anymore but that's not confirmed, we can't confirm that."
Al Jazeera aired excerpts of an audio recording in March in which the speaker's voice sounded like earlier messages from bin Laden, who has eluded all efforts to catch him since al Qaeda carried out the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
Bin Laden, if he is still alive, turned 52 on March 10, but he is known to suffer from ill-health.
There have been reports that he had died of natural causes in the past, but they have never been corroborated, and security analysts believe intelligence agencies monitoring jihadi websites on the Internet would have picked up some chatter.

Griffin also noted that after December 13, the CIA, which had been monitoring Bin Laden's cell phone communications, did not intercept a single call. Griffin said his new book would also discuss the various videos that have surfaced since then purporting to be of Bin Laden, and would show that they lacked demonstrable authenticity, and in some cases, were "obviously fakes."

Without Osama bin Laden, where would the so-called "war on terrorism" be? If he's dead, nobody in the US government is going to say anything, for obvious reasons. If he was alive, then the chances are that he is not at large, but most likely in maximum security custody somewhere, in solitary confinement, (quite possible even here in the US...who the hell knows?). There's been a $25 million reward for his capture, dead or alive, for the last 7.5 years, and nobody in the region in which he is *supposed* to be is interested? Gimme a break. For the most ridiculous, nonsensical blather about OBL, read some of Peter Bergen's articles... he's the resident CNN "expert" on terrorism... it's regurgitated Bush Admin's (now Obama's) baby-formula propaganda.

Does BBC still claim to have lost their 9/11 archive?
What's the latest on their "cock-up?" They prematurely report the collapse of Building 7 and then can't find their archive for this historic day? And now they covertly edit Bhutto's comment about dead Bin Laden. It might have been a slip on her part, but that cannot justify the editing.
And didn't PBS pull "America Rebuilds" which contains the Silverstein 'pull it" comment? I don't know of another example of something put out by PBS that is no longer available. Looks like they are censoring the statement by taking the entire documentary out of circulation! Of course it's out of the bag forever now.
