For Sale: West’s Deadly Nuclear Secrets

A WHISTLEBLOWER has made a series of extraordinary claims about how corrupt government officials allowed Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets.

Sibel Edmonds, a 37-year-old former Turkish language translator for the FBI, listened into hundreds of sensitive intercepted conversations while based at the agency’s Washington field office.

She approached The Sunday Times last month after reading about an Al-Qaeda terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey.

Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions.

Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.

The name of the official – who has held a series of top government posts – is known to The Sunday Times. He strongly denies the claims.

However, Edmonds said: “He was aiding foreign operatives against US interests by passing them highly classified information, not only from the State Department but also from the Pentagon, in exchange for money, position and political objectives.”

She claims that the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents.

“If you made public all the information that the FBI have on this case, you will see very high-level people going through criminal trials,” she said.

Her story shows just how much the West was infiltrated by foreign states seeking nuclear secrets. It illustrates how western government officials turned a blind eye to, or were even helping, countries such as Pakistan acquire bomb technology.

The wider nuclear network has been monitored for many years by a joint Anglo-American intelligence effort. But rather than shut it down, investigations by law enforcement bodies such as the FBI and Britain’s Revenue & Customs have been aborted to preserve diplomatic relations.

Edmonds, a fluent speaker of Turkish and Farsi, was recruited by the FBI in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Her previous claims about incompetence inside the FBI have been well documented in America.

She has given evidence to closed sessions of Congress and the 9/11 commission, but many of the key points of her testimony have remained secret. She has now decided to divulge some of that information after becoming disillusioned with the US authorities’ failure to act.

One of Edmonds’s main roles in the FBI was to translate thousands of hours of conversations by Turkish diplomatic and political targets that had been covertly recorded by the agency.

A backlog of tapes had built up, dating back to 1997, which were needed for an FBI investigation into links between the Turks and Pakistani, Israeli and US targets. Before she left the FBI in 2002 she heard evidence that pointed to money laundering, drug imports and attempts to acquire nuclear and conventional weapons technology.

“What I found was damning,” she said. “While the FBI was investigating, several arms of the government were shielding what was going on.”

The Turks and Israelis had planted “moles” in military and academic institutions which handled nuclear technology. Edmonds says there were several transactions of nuclear material every month, with the Pakistanis being among the eventual buyers. “The network appeared to be obtaining information from every nuclear agency in the United States,” she said.

They were helped, she says, by the high-ranking State Department official who provided some of their moles – mainly PhD students – with security clearance to work in sensitive nuclear research facilities. These included the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory in New Mexico, which is responsible for the security of the US nuclear deterrent.

In one conversation Edmonds heard the official arranging to pick up a $15,000 cash bribe. The package was to be dropped off at an agreed location by someone in the Turkish diplomatic community who was working for the network.

The Turks, she says, often acted as a conduit for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s spy agency, because they were less likely to attract suspicion. Venues such as the American Turkish Council in Washington were used to drop off the cash, which was picked up by the official.

Edmonds said: “I heard at least three transactions like this over a period of 2½ years. There are almost certainly more.”

The Pakistani operation was led by General Mahmoud Ahmad, then the ISI chief.

Intercepted communications showed Ahmad and his colleagues stationed in Washington were in constant contact with attachés in the Turkish embassy.

Intelligence analysts say that members of the ISI were close to Al-Qaeda before and after 9/11. Indeed, Ahmad was accused of sanctioning a $100,000 wire payment to Mohammed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers, immediately before the attacks.

The results of the espionage were almost certainly passed to Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani nuclear scientist.

Khan was close to Ahmad and the ISI. While running Pakistan’s nuclear programme, he became a millionaire by selling atomic secrets to Libya, Iran and North Korea. He also used a network of companies in America and Britain to obtain components for a nuclear programme.

Khan caused an alert among western intelligence agencies when his aides met Osama Bin Laden. “We were aware of contact between A Q Khan’s people and Al-Qaeda,” a former CIA officer said last week. “There was absolute panic when we initially discovered this, but it kind of panned out in the end.”

It is likely that the nuclear secrets stolen from the United States would have been sold to a number of rogue states by Khan.

Edmonds was later to see the scope of the Pakistani connections when it was revealed that one of her fellow translators at the FBI was the daughter of a Pakistani embassy official who worked for Ahmad. The translator was given top secret clearance despite protests from FBI investigators.

Edmonds says packages containing nuclear secrets were delivered by Turkish operatives, using their cover as members of the diplomatic and military community, to contacts at the Pakistani embassy in Washington.

Following 9/11, a number of the foreign operatives were taken in for questioning by the FBI on suspicion that they knew about or somehow aided the attacks.

Edmonds said the State Department official once again proved useful. “A primary target would call the official and point to names on the list and say, ‘We need to get them out of the US because we can’t afford for them to spill the beans’,” she said. “The official said that he would ‘take care of it’.”

The four suspects on the list were released from interrogation and extradited.

Edmonds also claims that a number of senior officials in the Pentagon had helped Israeli and Turkish agents.

“The people provided lists of potential moles from Pentagon-related institutions who had access to databases concerning this information,” she said.

“The handlers, who were part of the diplomatic community, would then try to recruit those people to become moles for the network. The lists contained all their ‘hooking points’, which could be financial or sexual pressure points, their exact job in the Pentagon and what stuff they had access to.”

One of the Pentagon figures under investigation was Lawrence Franklin, a former Pentagon analyst, who was jailed in 2006 for passing US defence information to lobbyists and sharing classified information with an Israeli diplomat.

“He was one of the top people providing information and packages during 2000 and 2001,” she said.

Once acquired, the nuclear secrets could have gone anywhere. The FBI monitored Turkish diplomats who were selling copies of the information to the highest bidder.

Edmonds said: “Certain greedy Turkish operators would make copies of the material and look around for buyers. They had agents who would find potential buyers.”

In summer 2000, Edmonds says the FBI monitored one of the agents as he met two Saudi Arabian businessmen in Detroit to sell nuclear information that had been stolen from an air force base in Alabama. She overheard the agent saying: “We have a package and we’re going to sell it for $250,000.”

Edmonds’s employment with the FBI lasted for just six months. In March 2002 she was dismissed after accusing a colleague of covering up illicit activity involving Turkish nationals.

She has always claimed that she was victimised for being outspoken and was vindicated by an Office of the Inspector General review of her case three years later. It found that one of the contributory reasons for her sacking was that she had made valid complaints.

The US attorney-general has imposed a state secrets privilege order on her, which prevents her revealing more details of the FBI’s methods and current investigations.

Her allegations were heard in a closed session of Congress, but no action has been taken and she continues to campaign for a public hearing.

She was able to discuss the case with The Sunday Times because, by the end of January 2002, the justice department had shut down the programme.

The senior official in the State Department no longer works there. Last week he denied all of Edmonds’s allegations: “If you are calling me to say somebody said that I took money, that’s outrageous . . . I do not have anything to say about such stupid ridiculous things as this.”

In researching this article, The Sunday Times has talked to two FBI officers (one serving, one former) and two former CIA sources who worked on nuclear proliferation. While none was aware of specific allegations against officials she names, they did provide overlapping corroboration of Edmonds’s story.

One of the CIA sources confirmed that the Turks had acquired nuclear secrets from the United States and shared the information with Pakistan and Israel. “We have no indication that Turkey has its own nuclear ambitions. But the Turks are traders. To my knowledge they became big players in the late 1990s,” the source said.

While...

Ahmad was in Washington D.C. during the week of 9/11/2001, his “most important meeting” took place with Marc Grossman. If this is any indication, Marc Grossman is the U.S. State Department official (ret.) mentioned in this article. Marc Grossman is also heavily involved in the Valerie Plame affair.

Who Is? Archives

Grossman-Plame

Grossman is said to have played a role in the Plame Affair - he had a memo drafted by a State Department department that outlined Wilson's trip to Niger and said his wife was at the CIA and worked on non-proliferation. The memo is apparently how Libby and Armitage learned Wilson's wife worked for the CIA. If Grossman was being investigated by the FBI, then it is a fair bet Brewster Jenning's (Plame's company) was also on to him (SE has confirmed the FBI was aware of Brewster Jennings, but we don't know whether the FBI knew it was a CIA front or not). So Plame is (possibly) investigating Grossman and then Grossman outs Plame, wrecking her investigation. That's supposed to be a coincidence? I don't think so.

Not sure how to take this yet.....

It is a little suspicious that a Murdock paper is covering this,...i.e just as nuclear Pakistan becomes intentionally destabilized with all blame going to :CIA-eda", and then Sibel mentions a meeting between Khan and Bin Laden just before 9/11 with Bin Laden's request for Nukes......Hmmmm

I would like to see a transcript of the interview to see how much they picked and edited her full story to fit their agenda?

...Perhaps its finally time to blame Pakistan and a few corrupt or blackmailed US politicians, and set the stage for pacifying a destabilized Nuclear Pakistan?

What does this picture gallery from Sibel Edmonds say?

Update...Lukery blogs about it....Sibel Edmonds names names in Pictures. .

I haven't looked at Kos for almost a year...911T Deniers, all!!

I used to ride those blind bastards hard because of their stupid "we are too too, to talk about unproven conspiracy theories," line of crap. I told them that they all would have egg on their collective face once the world connects the dots that Sibel Edmunds is revealing.

Wonder when Kos will admit he was duped?!

Voted Down ?

I nearly skipped this story because of the headline.
I once said Sibel should shit or get off the pot....Ok - this whole thing smells.
If you connect the dots with Jon's threads or the Kos story - the perps have just been identified.
Re: people who voted this story down - it shows this site still has shills and disinfo.
Kudos to Edmonds. The Truth is coming out.

Can we give this entry a title

that ensures everyone sees it? The actual article title doesn't suggest the connection to 9/11, and many may simply skip over it.

This news is huge. Please spread the word to every news outlet you can contact.

How about...

"Sibel Speaks... A Little" or "Sibel Edmonds Names Lt. General Mahmood Ahmad In Illegal Nuclear Arms Deals"...

Who Is? Archives

Yes

I think it would be helpful to have her name in the title.

Huge News...

This is indeed big news and has huge implications for our movement.

How about these for alternative headlines:-

"Revelations by F.B.I. whistle blower cast fresh doubt on official 9/11 narrative."

"FBI whistle blowers story raises new questions regarding 9/11 attacks."

"New revelations by FBI whistle blower imply 9/11 high level cover-up."

Do we know if the story is being covered by any media outlets in the US?

I disagree...

As it relates to 9/11..this story doesn't even register for me.

If you doubt it...go to this web site:

http://www.justacitizen.com/

And ask yourself....

"Why is there not one reference to 9/11 Truth?"

Another thing that bothers me about this and a few other narratives is that big names invovled with her allegations are no longer around to be invovled with any fact finding.

Has anyone located the Dickersons?

That and the fact that she seems to basically support the "intelligence failures' line of thought which is a huge part of the US government's cover-up strategry.

Can't Stop 9/11 Fever

I think it would be a mistake

to limit 9/11 Truth to a single objective. Obviously, we want justice for the victims of 9/11 and a restoration of constitutional authority in America. However, consider the array of tangential crimes that intersect with 9/11 Truth. For any lasting change, we must advocate for 9/11 Truths. The Edmonds case gets to the heart of the criminal machine: illegal drugs and guns trading, as it intersects with business-as-usual governance.

sim, I agree

To think that this blog would only consider one leg of the octopus without acknowledging the head is ludicrous.

Point Taken...

My intention definitely is not to limit 9/11 Truth in ways that would limit the truth.

In order to get a serious dialog about 9/11 Truth going in the USA we need to focus. I defiantly think there should be an hierarchy of 'issues' presented as a focus points. Some issues are just much stronger then others.

For example, we KNOW that WTC 7 was demolished on 9/11. We don't KNOW if Sibel Edmond's narrative is true or not. See? We cut to the chase.

WTC7, This most powerful of all the clues was perpetrated in broad daylight. Why is this issue better then the issue of Sibel Edmonds?

Because we KNOW that WTC 7 was demolished. We still have to figure out if Sibel is telling the truth let alone whether her secret information is relative to 9/11 Truth.

What other issues are on the list?

WTC 7 Demolition
WTC 7 Ommission
WTC 7 Non-Investigation
WTC 1 & 2 Demolition
The Israeli Spooks arrested in the area
Trading Scams on 911
The criminal negligence by those in charge (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld all un-responsive while the attack went down...bush is even on video during this time!)

Those are the issues I feel make the attacks of 9/11 ripe for a new investigation. Things like Sibel Edmonds narrative will require decades of waiting, hearings, secret closed door briefings, and ultimately, a report on how to better stop security leaks. (hint hint...more money).

Also, she seems to be pushing the Islamic Threat Theory which is just fucking ridiculous.

Slow Bleed.

Can't Stop 9/11 Fever

Documents

My understanding is that Edmonds has documents to support her statements. In one interview, she said she had boxes and boxes of them - like transcripts of communications.

Slow Bleed?

There is no mention of 911 Truth?

This recent article is probably the most interesting so far, mentioning some nice details about here case. But I'm worried about a few things in regards to the Sibel Edmonds narrative.

1. she hasn't full on connected it with 911 Truth. As you can see in this article, it's not even mentioned. Nor is it even mentioned on her web site.
2. her accusations are extreme and at this point, as the author pointed out in this article, no one has confirmed the allegations concerning high level officials

"In researching this article, The Sunday Times has talked to two FBI officers (one serving, one former) and two former CIA sources who worked on nuclear proliferation. While none was aware of specific allegations against officials she names, they did provide overlapping corroboration of Edmonds’s story."

The term 'overlapping corroboration' is nothing special . You don't need a 'nuke expert' to tell you that Turkey was looking for nuke secrets in the 90s.

3. Where could it possibly go from here you guys?

Consider a scenario where the US Government said "ok Sibel, we'll listen". Here is how it would play out, and I don't think many would dispute this or a close variation...

  1. an 'exploratory hearing' will be schedule a few months down the road, maybe 5 or 6 months. Maybe a 'procedural delay' in there somewhere.
  2. hearings will be conducted behind closed doors to talk to the highest level officials and Sibel.
  3. the information that threatens national security will be purged and the public will get a 'report' outlining the 'system improvements' that need to be applied to the 'pertanant agencies' where the 'security lapses' occurred. Coincidentally, the information the public most wants access to...and probably the most incriminating information to come out of these hearings will be in the 'secret report' that has the purged information in it.
  4. The government will start dolling out buckets of money to the agencies so they can improve themselves and promote the heads of the offices that these 'security lapses' occurred.
  5. Just don't worry. If you think your government isn't being on the 'up and up', you'll have to wait just 75 years to access the secret report concerning Sibel Edmond's allegations. Then you'll know for sure. Notice that 9/11 is not mentioned in my scenario at all.
  6. She seems to be re-enforcing the official conspiracy theory about 19 evil Arabs and 'intelligence failures' which are 2 huge parts of the official 911 Cover-up

I don't think it is mean to consider that Sibel's narrative is part of a 'slow bleed' program of disinformation meant to sap the focus and energy of the 911 Truth movement. It has been many years and we have hardly any developments in regards to 911 Truth. By design?

We would be naive to think that theories about 'No Planes" and "Space Beams" were the only disinformation weapons out there.

The most effective disinformation would indirectly connect itself to 911Truth. It would burrow itself into 9/11 Truth and, over time, suck energy and focus in the way I have described above.

This stuff definitely exists so you have to wonder: "Which narratives are disinformation?"

Does anyone consider this in regards to the Sibel Edmonds narrative as it relates to 911 Truth?

The other thing I find strange about Sibel's case is that it's 'half confirmed'. What I mean by this is that her termination from the FBI and the circumstances surrounding that have been more or less confirmed.

This gives some a false sense of security when it comes to trusting the rest of her allegations, which have not been corroborated yet. I've run into a few people who claim "her allegations have been all confirmed" and I have to say "no...her allegations of wrongful termination have been confirmed".

An example of 'half confirmation' is the term 'overlapping corroboration'.

So, I am not trying to offend anyone. I'm just providing a description of my own feelings towards this case. This 'slow bleed' disinformation exists and we'd be fools not to consider this as a potential candidate.

Can't Stop 9/11 Fever

Sibel has already been identified as credible

Daniel Ellsberg says Sibel Edmonds' case is far more explosive than the Pentagon Papers.

Also,

(July 8, 2004): DOJ Inspector General Report Supports FBI Translator’s Allegations

Glenn A. Fine, the Justice Department’s inspector general, completes his report on Sibel Edmonds’ allegations (see Afternoon March 7, 2002). The 100-page report determines that “many of Edmonds’ core allegations relating to the co-worker [Melek Can Dickerson] were supported by either documentary evidence or witnesses” and concludes that “the FBI did not, and still has not adequately investigated these allegations.” Additionally, Fine’s report concludes that Edmonds was fired because she was having a “disruptive effect,” which could be attributed to “Edmonds’ aggressive pursuit of her allegations of misconduct, which the FBI did not believe were supported and which it did not adequately investigate.” Fine adds, “[A]s we described throughout our report, many of her allegations had basis in fact. We believe… that the FBI did not take them seriously enough, and that her allegations were, in fact, the most significant factor in the FBI’s decision to terminate her services.” The report is immediately classified by the FBI. Not even Edmonds is allowed to see the contents. An unclassified 37-page summary of the report will be released in January 2005. [Washington Post, 7/9/2004; Associated Press, 7/30/2004; Associated Press, 1/14/2005; CNN, 1/14/2005; New York Times, 1/15/2005; Vanity Fair, 9/2005]

The same Ellsberg...

The same one who released the Pentagon Papers that led to the arrests of the United States criminals who massacred all those poor millions of Vietnamese and sent 58,000 troops to their deaths?

Oh wait, he released the papers but....hmmm...don't think anyone got arrested for that 'little' masacre huh?

Can you say 'prime suspect for slow bleed'?

And what does the RAND Corporation do anyway?

Can't Stop 9/11 Fever

Sibel is smart....

Surely it's a mistake to think that anyone who doesn't wear an 'investigate 9/11' T shirt isn't working toward 9/11 truth.
For some, particularly those in the public eye such as Rosie O'Donnell and Charlie Sheen, openly advocating 9/11truth
has been a disaster. These people have been attacked and marginalized by the media and have had their career's suffer as
a result. Where does that get them OR the truth movement?

If Sibel openly advocated 9/11 truth the media would use this to discredit her and she would instantly lose credibility with
the mainstream. We should remember that we have anonymity, Sibel doesn't have that luxury, she is smart to play her cards close
to her chest.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over Extreme...

Sibel's narrative as it relates to 9/11 Truth has yet to be confirmed. I'm not saying she is lying or anything. I'm not saying anyone should abandon Sibel's narrative. I'm not saying we should only focus on one issue. But we should gage the issues for relevancy and collectively come to agreements on what seems more important, what is stronger, what will give us the biggest hammer...and also what issues are bogging us down? What issues are holding back 9/11 Truth?

Can't Stop 9/11 Fever

The problem with this perspective

is that we don't know what issues are most important because we have never had an actual investigation of 9/11. That's why all aspects of 9/11 Truth are valuable.

I can understand your point...

However, there are certain things we have already collectively agreed on within this movement.

The demolition of WTC 7 is considered by most to be the strongest evidence that shows a conspiracy beyond '19 Arab Hijackers'. We don't need an investigation into WTC 7 to tell us it was demolished by 'someone'. It's apparent.

How is it apparent?

1. video evidence
2. physical analysis of the collapse shows 'controlled demolition'
3. and most damning, the government tried to pretend this collapse never occurred or atleast felt the need to not investigate it. And now they are coming out with an explanation 7 years later!
4. removal of evidence from the scene

If we need more evidence then what we already have gathered over 6 years of research and protest....just to get our government and country to re-look at the events... then I'm not too optimistic for the future.

Lastly, if you use WTC 7 as the hardcore focus to show the need for a new investigation then you get an inadvertant partner in your case. What I mean is that when you study the demolition of WTC 7, the realization that the entire complex was most likely demolished in a simliar way cuts all the way through the chase. The chase is the "19 evil Arabs" caused all this mayhem.

Can't Stop 9/11 Fever

I'm not sure we have "collectively agreed" on much,

and as compelling as WTC7 is, I think one has to look at a variety of evidence so that we can pursue whatever has the best chance of leading to prosecutions. I may think WTC7 was imploded, but I also think it is extremely unlikely that anyone will ever be prosecuted for that. On the other hand, Sibel Edmonds has concrete evidence that has been certified by third parties as legitimate. The prospect of a prosecution on the basis of her evidence seems much more likely than the prospect of getting a judge somewhere to accept that WTC7 was blown up.

So, I don't think it is a matter of hanging one's hat on what seems like the most obvious evidence of a crime. You also have to consider the type of evidence most likely to lead to a trial (under the circumstances). In a sense, it doesn't matter what seems most obvious to you. For example, I think the Magic Bullet is a bleeding obvious farce; but only Oswald has ever been considered for that crime.

I think there are several possibilities for 9/11 prosecutions, but really glaring things like the towers being demolished are the things least likely ever to have a criminal trial. They're worth studying, for sure, but I suspect the financial crimes and tangential crimes of drugs and guns are more likely to be pursued by the law.

Anyway, the people voting down this blog are counterproductive shills who want to sabotage this movement.

Sibel seems to have evidence

Sibel seems to have evidence of nuclear proliferation participated in by some top level perps. That's good to know but has nothing on 9-11. I guess both have to be investigated but I'm not putting all my marbles on something that was first and so far written only on a Murdoch owned company. There is also the possibility that whatever she heard or saw was meant for her to see and hear. She was in the FBI only for 6 months and could have been duped all along with false info which they can deny later. A Murdoch paper, there is something at play here.

Dumb...

Question. If Sibel Edmonds testified for 3 1/2 hours before the 9/11 Commission, and mentioned this information regarding Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad (which I'm assuming she did), and the 9/11 Commission was also given the information regarding the $100,000 wire transfer by the families to investigate, and the 9/11 Commission STILL omitted any information about Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad from the 9/11 Report, and to my knowledge, didn't even bother investigating any of the allegations, then... isn't that a blatant cover-up? Doesn't this further illustrate how ridiculously inadequate and compromised the 9/11 Commission actually was? Why would ANY legitimate investigation into 9/11 attacks not think that Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad wasn't worth looking into? It's absurd.

Think of the collective pressure

created by multiple revelations of obstruction of justice. The CIA tapes are getting press right now. Maybe Sibel gets attention in America at some point. Over time, even those who have blind faith in Bush will have to pay attention to the cumulative and overwhelming evidence of obstruction.

BradBlog is covering it...

HUGE

Thank you, Sibel
