Al-Qaeda among Libya rebels, NATO chief warns (*)

by Robert Winnett, and Duncan Gardham, Daily Telegraph, 30 March 2011

Libyan rebel forces may have been infiltrated by al-Qaeda fighters, [...] [NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) James Stavridis] has warned. [...]

While the [Libyan] opposition's leadership appeared to be "responsible men and women" fighting the Gaddafi regime, Admiral Stavridis said, "we have seen flickers in the intelligence of potential al Qaeda, Hizbollah, we've seen different things." [...]

William Hague, the [British] Foreign Secretary, sought to play down the concerns, welcoming a document from opposition leaders backing the creation of a free democracy in Libya. He said that there was a greater risk of terrorist threats if Britain and other countries did not intervene. But, Mr Hague said: " [...] Of course, there is a danger, if things go wrong in the region on a sustained basis, there could be opportunities for terrorism."

Remarks by the President in Address to the Nation on Libya

The White House website, 28 March 2011

Mindful of the risks and costs of military action, we are naturally reluctant to use force to solve the world’s many challenges. But when our interests and values are at stake, we have a responsibility to act. [...]  So while I will never minimize the costs involved in military action, I am convinced that a failure to act in Libya would have carried a far greater price for America. [...]

As Commander-in-Chief, I have no greater responsibility than keeping this country safe. [...]  I’ve made it clear that I will never hesitate to use our military swiftly, decisively, and unilaterally when necessary to defend our people, our homeland, our allies and our core interests. That's why we’re going after al Qaeda wherever they seek a foothold.

[US President Barack Obama, televised address to the nation on Libya, National Defense University, Washington, D.C., 28 March 2011]
