As he [FDR] hit his stride he hammered at what had become the central, if unacknowledged, theme of the [1928] Republican presidential campaign. "I have just come from the South," he told an audience at Binghamton, which had experienced a rash of Klan activity. "I have seen circulars down there in the Southern states that any man or woman in this audience would be ashamed to have in his home. I have seen circulars that were so unfit for publication that the people who wrote and printed and paid for them ought not to be put in jail, but ought to be put on the first boat and sent away from the United States." Roosevelt tried to shame New York's bigots into better behavior by associating them with their more virulent southern cousins. He told a tale from Dixie:

"Just after I got down to Georgia, an old friend of mine in a small country town, a farmer, came in to see me, and said, 'Mr. Roosevelt, I am worried. A lot of my neighbors, all Democrats - we are all Democrats down here - say that they cannot vote for Governor Smith, and I don't know what the reason is. But there must be some good answer. Will you tell me so I can go back and talk to them? They tell me, these neighbors of mine, and they show me printed handbills saying that if [Catholic] Governor Smith becomes president of the United States, the Methodist and Baptist marriages over here among our neighbors will all be void and that their children will be illegitimate.'"

Roosevelt's audience laughed at the improbability of this assertion. "You may laugh," he continued, "But they were not laughing. They thought it was true, and they were honest, law-abiding citizens. They did not have the education, the contact, to know better. Oh, I could go on and tell you a thousand stories along that line."

....Many of those who had known him before his inauguration and who watched him during the Hundred Days expressed amazement at how much larger he now seemed. Norman Davis and Raymond Fosdick had worked with Roosevelt in the Wilson administration; Davis told Fosdick, after a visit to the White House: "Ray, that fellow in there is not the fellow we used to know. There's been a miracle here." Fosdick agreed. "There HAD been a miracle, an intellectual and spiritual metamorphosis induced by adversity and triumph," he recounted later.

"Those lonely years of struggle when, as he told me once, his sole, determined purpose was to move his big toe, had done something to his character - something fine and strong which brought him courage and bold confidence, a depth of penetration and a new self-control. Fosdick afterward recalled a formal dinner at the White House. Roosevelt shuffled down the long passage from the state dining room to the East Room, where the guests were gathered.

"He used a cane and hung heavily on the arm of an aide; and his walk was the slow, painful, contorted shuffle of paralysis. As he approached the door the Marine Band played 'Hail to the Chief,' and in a flash I realized with a lump in my throat that this apparently broken man was indeed the chief - with the capacity and magnetism of great leadership, and bearing on his face and in his handsome eyes the mark of confidence and power."

....[conservative cabinet member Raymond] Moley would change his views regarding Roosevelt's policies. But he never lost his admiration for the man's remarkable gifts, including the ability to treat the weightiest subjects with ease and laughter. "In short, he was like the fairy-story prince who didn't know how to shudder. Nor even the realization that he was playing nine-pins with the skulls and thighbones of economic orthodowy seemed to worry him."

....But what if the sacrificial era has not gone by? Suppose the impulse to sacrifice, even to yield up the lives of children to gain supernatural favor, is still with us. If you consider, not what we say about ourselves, but what we do in relation to one another, you would observe that the twentieth century saw more children sacrificed to one cause or another than any previous century saw offered to its gods. The shift from religious belief to secular cause has not changed the fact that the increase of violence against innocents appears unrelenting.

With brutal precision, Wilfred Owen, writing during World War I in "The Parable of the Old Man and the Young," encapsulated the experience of the twentieth century. In his poem, even divine intervention cannot control Abraham's impulse to kill his child:

So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went,
And took the fire with with him, and a knife.
And as they sojourned both of them together,
Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father,
Behold the preparations, fire and iron,

By untangling our actions from the atavistic impulse that kills children in the name of virtue, we can at last free Isaac from the cords that, had they remained tied, would have denied Abraham his progeny. Unless we do, unless Abraham's impulse and the means to transform that impulse are discovered, then Wilfred Owen will prove to be a prophet of this century as well as a principal poet of the last....

For Some, the Doubts Began Early.

“Something is wrong with this picture,” thought Nathan Lomba, as he watched replays of the Twin Tower collapses on television on September 11, 2001. A licensed structural engineer trained in buildings’ responses to stress, Lomba saw more on the screen than you or I. He puzzled, “How did the structures collapse in near-symmetrical fashion when the damage was clearly not symmetrical?”

Lomba was hardly alone in his discomfort. Most structural engineers were surprised when the towers fell. They mainly kept their misgivings to themselves, though, as Scientific American and the Journal of Engineering Mechanics, BBC, the History Channel and government agencies such as FEMA and NIST offered varying and often imaginative theories to explain how fires brought the towers down.

A recent headline in Bloomberg News said: "Obama Offers Key Posts to those who Bankrolled Campaign."

Under the 11th Circuit's ruling in "The Siegelman Case," President Obama and contributors who accept appointments could be indicted and convicted of bribery and extortion if President Obama knew at the time they made a contribution that the donor wanted the post to which the President later appointed them.

54 former Attorneys General, both Democrats and Republicans, said the 11th Circuit's ruling in the Siegelman case means "a prosecutor has the power to indict and convict any politician and any donor whenever a donation was made and the politician took action consistent with the donor's desire, while aware of said desire."

Your Congressional representatives need to know about this. Send them a message today!

Here is why it is important to Members of the House and Senate:

What's at stake is whether an elected official can be prosecuted for doing something for a contributor. Sound crazy? It is! The U.S. Supreme Court made it clear in McCormick v. U.S. that it takes an actual explicit quid pro quo agreement before the line between politics and crime is crossed. However, in my case, the court said that juries may infer an agreement from the minds and actions of the elected official and the contributor, the opposite of explicit.

The 54 former State Attorneys General told the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in the Siegelman case: "Such an interpretation puts at risk every politician who accepts a campaign contribution." "...criminalizing activities that fall short of an explicit quid pro quo agreement, can only lead to an impermissible chilling effect on the First Amendment right to contribute to political campaigns."

It is important not only to my freedom but also to every elected official, including the President Obama, to get this First Amendment issue clarified.

As I raise money to pay for my $150,000 appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court I am asking you to continue the fight in Congress.
