I'm glad Ray McGovern is on our side, the guy knows how to get after it. He's as robust in his stance as anyone with the possible exception of Alex Jones.

I love the quote from Madison to end the article:

"I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.... The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home."

It seems so obvious, at this point, a reference to a "creeping fascism" seems an understatement?

My honest impression is the same circles of power who were responsible for the machinations of WWII, are the same hands at work in recent desperate developments, i.,e, OKC, WTC 93 and 9/11. I firmly believe these heinous acts are committed as much out of fear (of the loss of power) as it is pure greed or lust for power!

The ruling elite (oligarchs) are indeed feeling pressure and fear more losses that make 2008 pivotal. I hope they lose!

In the end, I defend the average American to the extent that shrinking incomes pinch them. It's been almost a generation of two incomes, and frequently, those working two jobs. Americans are too tired to be informed and aggressive in their pursuit of a solution! They are not sheepish just distracted and occupied with making a living!

The American's honesty and work ethic--if anything--has worked against them, allowing an absolutely unscrupulous leadership to run amok!

It's by intent the average citizen can see nothing out of the ordinary in his immediate environment other than noticing that money doesn't go as far. It's a Psy Op to allow the average person to remain psychologically comfortable with a perilous status quo!

To this extent, McGovern may be incorrect? I don't believe the average American will have much choice but to be more active in 2008 to resist and divert the consummation of a total police state. It's 1968 all over again but with much higher stakes!

My bet is on Americans to step up as a "People" to meet the clear challenges of this next year. The wool will no longer be pulled over their eyes, because they will be forced to act!

Anyone can begin to act by something as simple as signing up at Wexler wants Hearings to sign a petition asking for names of citizens who desire hearings to seek the impeachment of Cheney. It can only be a good thing to put our grimacing V.P. on his heels!

First, let me address the scope of contemporary political history. Conceptualizing what “contemporary political history”does and does not encompass requires a definition of what is meant by both “contemporary” and “political.” Starting with the term “contemporary,” I offer two premises: (1) Most reasoning in political affairs is historical, as opposed to economic or legal; (2) Most historical reasoning arises from inferences drawn from contemporary history. Far be it from me to challenge the assumed truths regarding "those critical people and events that go into forming the public’s presumptions about its immediate past." Nor shall I openly challenge how those assumed truths have been uncritically accepted as fact, forming the orthodoxy of recent history.
