Making Sense of Charlie Sheen's 9/11 Media Coverage
There was an abundance of coverage today on Charlie Sheen's recent comments regarding 9/11. This story not only had legs, it ran all over the media today. The coverage today is an insight of what those that question 9/11 are up against.
Scouring the media response on Sheen's comments today it was more than obvious that a good bit of the coverage was dishonest and outright hypocritical, and I felt the need to point it out before it got too out of control.
The hypocrisy of 9/11 media coverage
The primary tactic of the negative news coverage today focused on painting Charlie Sheen as a 'lone nut' - ignoring that 66% of New Yorkers who want a new investigation, ignoring the family members frustrated with the 9/11 cover up, and pretending as though those that question 9/11 were somehow a fringe edge only made up of 'liberal Hollywood' types.
While some more reputable sources simply covered the story itself, a large number of right wing, left wing, and Hollywood blogs made it a focus to not only label Sheen as a 'drug addict', 'prostitute lover', 'conspiracy theorist', 'idiot', etc. but also to bash him for having an opinion - that his 'opinion doesn't matter because he is nothing but a Hollywood star'. The irony being that they probably know even less than Sheen regarding 9/11, otherwise they might have some questions themselves.
The hypocrisy in the statements about Sheen's lack of knowledge on the subject of 9/11 lies in the fact that when people who do have the proper credentials to question 9/11 ask real questions they get no coverage by these same media outlets. While Sheen is not a government official, a 9/11 family member, an esteemed scientist, a rogue scholar, or a member of military intelligence - those that are exactly these things never get any coverage whatsoever.
Where was the media when the Jersey Girls complained about Philip Zelikow being appointed to head the 9/11 commission?
Where was the media when Dr. David Ray Griffin (professor emeritus of philosophy, religion, and theology, at the Claremont School of Theology for over 20 years) went on CSPAN to discuss the failures of the 9/11 commission?
Where was the media when the Jersey Girls called the 9/11 Commission Report a 'hollow failure'?
Where was the media for the 9/11 Congressional Hearing on the failures of the 9/11 commission held last July?
Where was the media when Dr. Steven Jones (professor of physics at BYU) came out supporting a real investigation into the collapse of WTC7?
Where was the media when Michael Meacher (former member of British Parliament) questioned the truth behind 9/11?
Where was the media when Morgan Reynolds (former Bush cabinet member) stated that 9/11 was an inside job?
Where was the media when Paul Craig Roberts (assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury under Reagan) said 'the account in the 911 report is a total contradiction to the laws of physics'?
Why has the media consistently avoided asking any real questions, or educating the American people regarding 9/11 for the last 4+ years?
The hypocrisy of the media in bashing Sheen for having no relative background related to 9/11 - while at the same time refusing to cover the monstrous list of more credible skeptics - is more than readily visible to anyone who has paid attention to 9/11 over the last few years. If the media had any real desire to cover 'more credible' 9/11 skeptics they could have done so with at least a dozen prominent figures in the recent past. Which leads me to my question..
Why this story? Why now?
Besides the obvious - that Charlie Sheen is a Hollywood star, and he made pointed comments about 9/11 and Bush - what are the reasons that this story is getting coverage now? Knowing that the majority of today's 'news' is based on entertainment and not facts, it seems reasonable to assume that the primary reason is ratings. But, perhaps it also has to do with the need to paint liberals as 'crazy idiots' given the Republican's ongoing march towards lower and lower approval ratings? Nothing revitalizes the faith in the Republican party like bashing a 'crazy liberal' like Michael Moore right?
It's about time..
I think it is great that 9/11 skeptics have finally gotten a voice through the recent comments by Sheen, and I stand fully behind Sheen in stating his opinions regarding the massive list of questions surrounding 9/11. I only wish that the media's hunger for the story were driven based on a true desire to discuss the real issues surrounding the official story of 9/11, and not just to spark a massive hate-fest.
Until the media stops singling out Sheen as a 'lone nut', starts admitting that hundreds of thousands of Americans question the official story of 9/11, and starts giving a serious look at prominent 9/11 researchers, we should only assume that the media is doing nothing but capitalizing off the largest cover up in modern history - 9/11.
A very special thanks to 'Showbiz tonight' for being the first show to have the guts to discuss 9/11 on prime time, Charlie Sheen for lending his name to the cause, and to those news outlets that simply covered his statements without attacking him or others that question 9/11.
Note: There is sure to be a wave of followups on television tonight, check out the channels and post in the comments if you happen across any coverage. Also, 'Showbiz Tonight' had Alex Jones on a few minutes ago, be sure to catch the rerun at 11pm EST tonight.
